It has sleeping quarters for nine, along
with a living room, kitchen, and dining area.

 Masen

Edward Masen:
A graduate of Hawai'i Pacific University, Edward Masen holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology with a minor in mechanical engineering.  He has been an avid photographer for many years and has used his engineering knowledge to adjust his cameras for shark research use, giving the world some of the most spectacular high-speed shots of these animals in their natural habitat.

Mr. Masen spent three months at the Farallon Islands marine sanctuary off the coast of San Francisco, “cutting his teeth” on shark research.  He started Masen Marine Research in early 2004 with the help of his family and friends.  In addition to being president of the company, he heads up the research team aboard the Galeos, collecting most of the underwater data himself.

Emmett/Gopher

Emmett McCarty:

Emmett McCarty grew up just outside of Memphis, Tennessee.  On a family vacation to Hawaii three years ago, he ran into the MMR crew and decided to join them on a local expedition to see what they were all about.  He’s been part of the crew ever since, serving as cook for the crew and on-deck helper to Mr. Masen, as well as helping out as needed in other areas.

Rosalie/Lee

Lee Hale:

Ms. Hale holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Hawai'i Pacific University.  She keeps the Galeos in tip-top shape and also serves as the grant and researcher writer of the crew.  When she’s not aboard the research vessel, she spends her free time surfing.

Ms. Hale also spent three months at the Farallon Islands marine sanctuary off the coast of San Francisco.

Jasper/Whit

Jasper Whitlock:

The son of an army medical officer and a registered nurse in his own right, Jasper Whitlock holds the positions of navigator and captain, and helps with data collection and interpretation.  Along with his other duties, Mr. Whitlock is the team medic, having trained as an EMT in addition to his nursing background.  He is capable of responding to any medical needs that may arise onboard.  When he’s not an expedition, he’s busy surfing.

Mr. Whitlock spent three months at the Farallon Islands with Mr. Masen and Ms. Hale.

Masen's Aunt Esme

Esme Masen:

Esme Masen is a graduate of Hawai'i Pacific University and holds a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education.  She left her job as a third grade teacher to become Director of Operations at Masen Marine Research.  Ms. Masen is in charge of requesting and controlling grant funding for the company, along with the day-to-day activities of running the office in Hawaii.  She accompanies the MMR crew on their travels and helps to secure any and all supplies they require.

Lizzy, Masen's best girl.

Lizzy Masen:

Lizzy is a two year-old Boston Terrier rescued from
an animal shelter in Australia by Edward Masen.
She enjoys skateboarding and surfing,
along with chewing Mr. Masen’s sneakers.
She accompanies the crew on all of their expeditions.
